In early September 2026, heat warnings are back over part of the country. After a summer that ran one heat wave into the next and saw the first-ever activation of France's "extreme heat" Orsec emergency plan, this late episode is not an end-of-season anomaly. It confirms a trend climate agencies have documented for years: the exertional heat stroke risk window no longer fits inside two summer months, and the organisations that have to respond to it are better served by equipment built for a season that runs from May to October.
A September heat wave is no longer exceptional
The EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service and Météo-France describe the same phenomenon: the warm season is stretching at both ends, with early episodes from mid-May and late waves in September, sometimes into early October. Recent summers have shown it, from the late-August 2023 heat to the September peaks seen in the last few years.
2026 fits that pattern exactly. France went into orange or red heat vigilance repeatedly from June, the government triggered its "extreme heat" Orsec plan for the first time in its history in early July, and a heat dome pushed temperatures past 40°C over Italy and the Balkans in late August. An episode in early September is not an isolated surprise, it is the continuation of a season that never really paused.
The problem is that September is exactly when many organisations wind their response down. Race calendars shift to autumn, seasonal EHS measures start to be lifted, summer reinforcements at fire services stand down. The heat has not followed that calendar. It is an exposure gap: the risk stays high while organisational vigilance drops.
What September heat changes for exertional heat stroke risk
Several groups stay fully exposed in September.
- Sports events. Trails, marathons, corporate challenges and Hyrox-style events resume in force in September and October. The calendar is dense, residual heat is real, and some participants arrive under-prepared after a summer too hot to train properly.
- EHS and industry. Grape and late harvests, back-to-work logistics peaks and construction sites catching up on summer delays concentrate heavy physical workload into days that are still hot.
- Emergency and civil protection services. Late-season vegetation fires, medical cover for back-to-work events and outdoor operations keep responders themselves exposed to exertional heat stroke.
Clinically, nothing changes with the calendar. Severe exertional heat stroke is treated with cold water immersion started within the first 30 minutes, under the "Cool First, Transport Second" principle (ACSM 2023, IOC/BJSM 2021, Casa et al. 2007). The month of the year changes neither the pathophysiology nor the treatment window.
From a summer mindset to a long-season mindset
The most concrete shift is in how cooling equipment is bought and managed. Kit treated as an exceptional summer purchase gets deployed once, then stored.
